Advantages and disadvantages of timing belt drive

May 10, 2024
The advantages and disadvantages of Synchronous belt drive are summarized as follows:

Advantage:
1. The Timing Belt has no slippage when working and has an accurate transmission ratio, slip-free synchronous transmission.
2. The timing belt has high transmission efficiency and a good energy-saving effect. Compared with ribbed V belt transmission, it has an obvious energy-saving effect.
3. The timing belt transmission ratio range is large and the structure is compact. Because the synchronous belt does not require large tension, the size of the Belt Pulley shaft and bearings can be decreased. Therefore, the synchronous belt drive has a more compact structure.

Disadvantage:
1. Frequent starts with impact loads may directly cause the belt teeth to jump out of the Timing Belt Pulley tooth grooves and climb the teeth.
2. The timing belt drive tension is inappropriate.
3. The timing belt drive is overloaded.
4. The synchronization gear tooth profiles are not on the same plane (parallelism error).
